Ash and friends have arrived at a river just outside of Blackthorn City. They see a Dratini laying by the river. They go to have a closer look when all of sudden a Gyarados comes out of the water and attacks. A girl comes over and tells them that this is her Dratini. Her assistant also arrives and reveals her to be Clair, the Blackthorn Gym Leader. They are on their way to perform a annual tradition at a waterfall up the river, and Clair's Dratini is getting ready to shed its skin. Ash and friends decide to help her keep Dratini safe as they make their trip. Meanwhile, Team Rocket is planning on capturing Dratini for Giovanni.
